WhatsApp, the world’s most popular messaging service, now allows you to track your friends’ location. The application is getting the all new feature of “live location” that will allow its users to share their location in real-time. Yes you heard that right, you can now share your location real-time giving access to your friends.
You can share your live location for up to 8 hours. The following is the process of how you can share your location. Tap on ‘Location’ under the options of attachment. Once your application is updated, you will see the new option called ‘Share live Location.’ The next step is to allow for how long you want to share your location with your friends. It can be 15 minutes, an hour or up to 8 hours. When you select the desired time you will see a map in the chat with your location on it. Your location will be broadcasted in real time. There is nothing to worry about though, you can stop the feature anytime you want to.
This new feature can be very useful. If your friends share their location with you, you can guide them with the directions. You can even check that if their “on my way” is right or not. Well, that can not be very useful for your friends who text I’m on my way while still in bed.
For many people this feature may seem creepy but according to WhatsApp it is a “simple and secure way to let people know where you are.” It also takes care of your privacy as the user can end sharing the location anytime they want to.
Talking to Mashable about the impact of this feature, the product manager of WhatsApp Zafir Khan said: “Our engineering team spent a significant amount of time optimizing for battery usage,”
“All of those things inform how often we get location updates form your device, battery is really critical.” he added.
The Live Location feature will be rolling out for the Android device and iOS in the coming weeks. What are your thoughts about the new feature? Share your views in the comment box below.
